Britain’s Prince Charles will travel to Armenia on Tuesday on what will be the first-ever visit to the country by a member of the British royal family organized by a London-based former Armenian prime minister.

The British Embassy in Yerevan announced on Friday that Charles will meet with President Serzh Sarkisian and Catholicos Garegin II, visit ancient Armenian monuments and promote a charity project in the Armenian capital during the three-day private trip.

The project called “Yerevan My Love” is the brainchild of Armen Sarkisian (no relation to the president), a former scholar who has lived and done business in Britain after serving as Armenia’s prime minister from 1996-1997. It aims to reconstruct historical buildings in the city and use them for charitable purposes.

Armen Sarkisian and Charles have jointly raised funds for the project as well as a separate effort to restore a medieval castle in Scotland in recent years.

Serzh Sarkisian and Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian attended fundraising dinners organized by them in the United Kingdom in February 2010 and June 2011 respectively. The Armenian president also met Queen Elizabeth II at the time.

A statement by the British Embassy said that Charles will attend a concert in Yerevan’s Opera House and an ensuing dinner in honor of “Yerevan My Love” sponsors.
