Veteran politician Davit Shahnazarian tells “Aravot” that Russia may still meddle in the ongoing dramatic developments in Ukraine. “In all likelihood, [President Vladimir] Putin will not recognize the legitimacy of Ukraine’s new authorities,” he says. “And unless the international community takes serious steps, Russia will provoke a dangerous destabilization in Ukraine’s southeastern regions.” Shahnazarian claims that Russia’s attempts to “partition Ukraine” will backfire and scuttle the creation of a Russian-led Eurasian Union.
“Vladimir Putin has lost Ukraine, meaning that he has also lost the strategic prospect of the Eurasian Union,” concurs “Haykakan Zhamanak.” The paper says that Putin was in a much better position to recreate the Soviet Union before the outbreak of anti-government protests in Kiev last November.
“Zhamanak” says the uprising in Ukraine has been welcomed by those Armenian groups and individuals that were scornfully described as “marginal” by former President Levon Ter-Petrosian last autumn. “From that perspective, a popular struggle for independence is marginal behavior,” writes the pro-Western paper. It says the events in Ukraine have exposed the “political quagmire” which Armenia is currently in.
“168 Zham” says that Armenia’s main pro-government and opposition forces are unwilling to learn any lessons from the Ukrainian revolution. The paper says the Armenian authorities must be especially interested in drawing such lessons. In particular, it says, they should be worried about the widely publicized images of luxurious villas of Ukraine’s deposed leaders that have been seized by protesters in the last few days. “Ukraine was governed but people who not only were corrupt and made incredible fortunes but also had distorted mindsets,” continues the paper. “They thought that they will rule forever, just like dictators and emperors. One can find many differences between Armenia and Ukraine, but the two countries are similar in terms of the nature of their ruling regimes.”
“Against such a background, our authorities’ hard work aimed at joining the [Russian-led] Customs Union are not only ridiculous but also humiliating for our nation,” “Hraparak” comments for its part.
