“Zhoghovurd” reports that Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian has met with hundreds of Armenian veterans of the Nagorno-Karabakh war to discuss the situation on the frontlines and their possible support for the Armenian military. Vartan Avetisian, an army general, is quoted as saying that the meeting was a big success as evidenced by the “enthusiasm” of its participants affiliated with various non-governmental organizations. “The Defense Ministry is ready to hold more such meetings on plans and proposals,” he says.

In an interview with “Hraparak,” former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratian comments on government efforts to boost Armenian agricultural exports to Russia following a ban on food imports from Europe and the United States that has been imposed by Moscow. “The government is right but there is one thing it is unable to solve,” says Bagratian. “How to make sure that there are many exporters? How to make sure that this export drive reaches villagers? I think that the government will commit a mistake if, for example, it helps a single company and declares that that company is ready to manage the entire export of agricultural products. There are several companies specializing in agricultural exports. I hope that the government will increase not only exports to Russia but also the number of such companies that directly reach farmers.”

“Aravot” sees particularly good opportunities for exports of Armenian wine to Russia. “A wine exhibition has opened in Moscow today, but the Armenian government learned about it only four days ago, which is so short a notice that entrepreneurs were unable to take part in the exhibition,” writes the paper.”

“Zhamanak” predicts that contrary to statements made by opposition leaders the political life in Armenia will not be “heated” this fall. “It was expected that the autumn will be heated because of the anti-government quartet [of political parties] and its 12 demands addressed to the authorities,” writes the paper. “Most of those demands have not been fulfilled. The quartet said earlier that it will hold a national rally this fall to discuss the authorities’ response to the demands and determine its further actions.”
