“Aravot” believes that the Armenian police can easily identify and prosecute those responsible for the latest series of attacks on opposition activists. The paper argues that the deputy chief of the Armenian police, Levon Yeranosian, has effectively admitted his involvement in one of those attacks. “In a rule-of-law state, such an official and his subordinates would go to prison for respectively masterminding and executing that,” it says in an editorial.

“There are assertions that if Armenia was a normal country the national police chief, Vladimir Gasparian, would have to resign after what happened,” writes “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun.” “This is a weird thought. For if Armenia was a normal country Vladimir Gasparian would not be police chief in the first place. And why should he resign? After all, the main police function in Armenia is not to fight against crime but to keep Serzh Sarkisian in power. Nobody makes secret of that.”

“Haykakan Zhamanak” analyzes the continuing depreciation of the Armenian dram. “The existing situation is especially noteworthy in that Armenia’s most high-ranking government officials and the Central Bank chairman have expressed no concerns [about the dram’s exchange rate] in their public statements made of late,” writes the paper. “This shows that they do not understand the gravity of the situation.” It says that the dram weakened further on Friday despite the Central Bank’s increased dollar interventions. It predicts that the process will continue unabated in the days ahead. “That will have a direct influence on [currency] market players and further stimulate the depreciation,” concludes “Haykakan Zhamanak.”
