The Armenian parliament began debating on Monday a European-backed bill that would ease serious restrictions on freedom of assembly imposed by the government following the bloody suppression of post-election opposition protests in Yerevan.

President Serzh Sarkisian said Armenian prosecutors and courts should not imprison anyone for their political views as trials continued on Monday of opposition activists challenging the legitimacy of his victory in last February’s disputed presidential election.

The governing Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) easily retained its control over four administrative districts of Yerevan in Sunday’s local elections boycotted by the opposition.
